The news portal points out that Cárcamo “is an older adult who faces various chronic illnesses and a delicate state of health,” and that “preliminarily it is known that police patrols arrived at his house, in the municipality of La Paz Centro, and “They took him around 9 in the morning.”
He also recalled that Leo Cárcamo Herrera “was arrested for the first time in January 2019, when he was still an active journalist on a local radio station. However, he was released hours later. He added that his relatives “remain absolutely silent” about his arrest.
Cárcamo’s arrest, according to the information portal, was confirmed by Alertas Libertad de Prensa Nicaragua, of the Foundation for Freedom of Press and Expression, FLED.
Additionally, in the department of León, the arrest of retired doctor Arnoldo Toruño, a former professor, who at the time also faced sieges and whose house was burned by Sandinista activists during the 2018 rebellion, was announced.
For its part, the Blue and White Monitoring civic network reported 12 “confirmed arbitrary arrests” and others to be confirmed in the areas indicated by the media, as part of a “repressive escalation of the dictatorship.”
At the moment, neither the government of Nicaragua nor the National Police have offered their versions regarding the denunciation of these arrests, and they generally do not comment.
