Just like last year, this time the Jozef Vengloš Award for the best football coach in Slovakia went into the hands Vladimir Weiss st. While in 2020 he was awarded for his excellent work on the bench of the Georgian national team, which he almost received until EURO 2020, he has now won a trophy as the helmsman of Slovan Bratislava.
When we received the award a year ago, Vladimír Weiss stated that he did not even count on it and did not expect anyone to remember him at all. But now it was different. The 57-year-old from Bratislava also admitted this: “I will not lie that I was waiting in the corner of my soul now, because we played a group of the Conference League, we are doing well with Slovan and we lead the league. But Slovakia has a lot of good coaches. Especially young people who are gradually stepping on our backs. But we’ll see what happens next. I appreciate every award. ”
Football Slovan continues in league dominance even after the arrival of Vladimír Weiss st. on his bench. However, he does not think that steering “whites” is a simple matter. “People may think that training Slovan is easy. The opposite is true,” points out.
“It’s not a walk in the rose garden, because there is a lot of pressure and expectations. In addition, it is not easy to train players who are from thirteen countries. Everyone is different and has their quality and problems. It is not easy. But I think we handle it well. We must end this year successfully. When I said that Slovan will be better during the summer, so I stand for it, “ declared.

Real, Barca or Bayern on Tehelne pole
His big dream is to repeat the cup tale in the Champions League, which he experienced as coach Artmedie Petržalka in 2005, when he introduced himself to the team from behind the Old Bridge in the group stage. According to Vladimír Weiss, this is not unrealistic, but it is still very complicated.
“Competition in Europe is very strong and it is becoming increasingly difficult to fight. Whether in the Conference League, the European League or the Champions League. It is a very difficult journey, but we will continue to dream. As I said when I joined Slovan – I believe that one day a Slovak and Slavic fan will welcome big clubs like Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and the like in that beautiful stadium. I believe that the Slavs will one day succeed in the Champions League, “ he wishes.

Štefan Tarkovič is the right man for the national team
After an unsuccessful qualification to advance to the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, the union’s table was the question of who should lead the “falcons” on their next journey. The return of Vladimír Weiss Sr. was mentioned most often, and this topic was really hot.
In January, everything finally came together and Vladimír Weiss remained in the service of Slovan Bratislava. A little later, Štefan Tarkovič was reaffirmed as the national team coach and the case was closed.
However, Vladimir Weiss wears st. the idea that he would come back in the future if he had such an opportunity? “I said the national team was not refused, so I went to the talks.”
“I know the situation and the national team has given me a lot. I wanted to give her something back, but the club was against what I had to respect. Štefan Tarkovič is an excellent coach and it is good that he stayed. He is a good friend of mine, he understands football and I wish him all the best. Also a boy, ”Vladimír Weiss sent a compliment to his coaching colleague and the national team.

“I think we have a good team. I see experienced players like Marek Hamšík, Juro Kucka and Vlado (Weiss Jr.) who still have something to give the team. There is an excellent middle generation, whether Lobotka or ‘Škrinka’, who follows in the footsteps of a pair of ‘immortal’ Hamšík and Škrtel. ”
“Slovakia has good players, including young Suslov and Strelec, and these fighters will one day replace those who have been shot. One never knows what will happen in football, of course, never say never, but certainly not now. ‘Pišta’ (Štefan Tarkovič, editor’s note) is a good coach and in the right place. Everything is as it should be,” smiled Vladimir Weiss st.
