Against this background, MPs from the parliamentary legal committee interrupted their summer vacation to vote on urgent legislative changes. They accepted that the intimate relationship was equated to the cases of conjugal partnership and cohabitation without marriage, under whose protection cases of domestic violence fell. More serious punishments were also voted for the infliction of light and medium bodily harm.

In Vidin, a 19-year-old beat and cut his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend’s hair, despite having a restraining order. She said that the young man took her to his home against her will. She managed to escape and tell her relatives, who filed a police report. Meanwhile, in just a few days, three pregnant women from Burgas sought protection from domestic violence at the Prevention Center. One of them lost her baby and the other two were examined by a doctor to determine if there was any danger to them and their fetus.

The district court twice ordered the most severe measure of “custodial detention”. Once for the attacker of the pregnant girl and a second time for the attacker who beat his wife and her father in front of their 16-year-old daughter.

The accused already has a sentence for inflicting medium bodily harm, but his public defender today told a different story: “He told me that the victim’s claims were a lie and rather that she attacked him. He even showed me a scratch on his neck,” said Vladimir Gospodinov.

The lawyer authorized by the accused refused to defend him.

“I have moral considerations. I am a woman and a mother, I cannot defend him”, said the lawyer. Veselina Vasileva.
