Defense locations in Brabant have to deal with undesirable behavior such as bullying and sexual harassment. And there is an unsafe environment for students and employees. Furthermore, the defense locations are confronted with hard drug use, there are suspicions of theft and violation of their own rules. “Cadet reports that fellow cadet put his hand under her dress.”
This is evident from documents that Omroep Brabant has requested from the Ministry of Defence. The documents concern reports about integrity and undesirable behavior at Defense locations in our province, from January 2020 up to and including last year. A total of 154 reports were made during this period. It is not known what happened to the reports afterwards.
Most reports of inappropriate behavior
Neo-Nazi statements by a student, hard drug use at a barracks, a film of a soldier using drugs. This is a small selection of the 154 reports, the vast majority of which concern undesirable behaviour.
Fifteen of the reports concern sexually transgressive behaviour. This is described in the reports as follows, for example: “Cadet reports that fellow cadet put his hand under her dress”, “Sexual harassment and threats between two students” and “Suspected sexual harassment by manager.”
Other forms of intimidation are also mentioned in the reports. For example, bullying, intimidating shouting and unsafe behavior are mentioned several times. For example, the reports state: “Throat pinched by another corporal”, “intimidating shouting and aggressive behavior on the bus” and “Employee pushed against a door by a colleague.”
Royal Military Academy
Most notable are the reports of inappropriate behavior at the Royal Military Academy in Breda. The 28 reports refer several times to sexual harassment and transgressive behavior at that location. Managers would also have been guilty of intimidating behavior.
In the past, the academy had to deal with undesirable behavior, after which improvements were promised.
Oirschot
The Ruyter van Steveninckkazerne in Oirschot is mentioned 27 times. At this defense location, it is striking that several reports concern hard drug use at the barracks or that hard drugs were found at the barracks. Also at this defense location it is striking that sexual harassment, bullying and aggression are mentioned several times.
What is also striking about this barracks is this report about theft: “Defense goods for sale on the internet. Marketplace and Facebook.”
Vught
At the Lunetten barracks and Van Brederode barracks in Vught, there are several reports about a soldier who showed a video to a colleague in which he uses drugs. That video apparently made such an impression that it was reported seven times by different soldiers. Other reports from Vught concern destruction of buildings where the soldiers are staying.
Defense response
It is unknown what happened to the reports. For example, whether people have been punished for it, or whether an investigation has shown that the report was unjustified. Omroep Brabant asked Defense about this two weeks ago, but the ministry says it needs more time to come up with a response.
