TEHRAN (dpa) – During the protests after the death of a young woman in police custody, the willingness to use violence has increased significantly both by the security forces and among the demonstrators, eyewitnesses report.
According to media reports, 41 people have been killed in the ongoing protests against the regime in Iran. The Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported on Sunday, but there was no official confirmation. The protests, triggered by the death of a young woman, continued into the night. Videos were shared on social media showing protests in the capital Tehran and other parts of the country. Unable to verify registrations.
According to eyewitnesses in Tehran, the willingness to use violence is increasing, both by the security forces and among protesters. Security forces were becoming more aggressive and more gunshots were heard, it was said. Among the protesters, young people in particular acted aggressively. They destroyed public facilities, set cars and garbage cans on fire, and beat police officers. Even the slogans against the Islamic leadership would become more radical: in addition to “Death to the dictator”, the protesters also chanted “This is the year of the bloodbath!” and: “We would rather die than continue to suffer humiliation!”
The protests were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. She had been arrested by the deputy squad for violating the strict Islamic dress code. Exactly what happened to Amini after her arrest is unclear. It is known that she initially fell into a coma and died in hospital on September 16. Critics accuse the morality police of using violence. Police deny the allegations.
