Reporter: Poor New York – Dream City in the Pandemic | Reporter – On Site | DW

Sixta has lived in New York for 34 years. She immigrated illegally from Mexico. Her husband left her a long time ago and she raised five children here alone. Sixta’s yield from collecting bottles is currently lower than usual. Because she was on hunger strike for more than two weeks. Together with other activists, Sixta fought for the state to finally help citizens like you, citizens without papers and largely without rights.

Many people in the USA are like Sixta: around 50 million Americans are suffering from “food insecurity” because of the pandemic, estimates the aid organization Feeding America. Bastian Hartig shows us the stark contrasts between rich and poor in New York in his report.
