Reportable event at Braunschweig companies

When evaluating the measurements for the discharge of radioactive substances with air, the Braunschweig radiation and medical technology company Eckert & Ziegler Nuclitec determined on December 17, 2020 that the maximum permissible monthly discharge for the radionuclide C-14 via chimney 4 was exceeded for the month of December . However, the maximum permissible derivation for the 2020 calendar year will probably continue to be well below the limit value of 0.3 millisievert effective dose for individuals in the population. There is therefore no risk to the population or the environment.
The probable cause is the discharge of radioactive substances with water in the
50th calendar week in which the tank contents were homogenized by a circulation pump in accordance with a condition of the permit. The constant movement of the wastewater may have led to increased emissions of the radionuclide C-14 from the water or the agitated sludge from the tank. Eckert & Ziegler Nuclitec carried out an additional control measurement for the 51st calendar week while the sample was being taken, which did not show any abnormally high values. Experts from the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) took soil samples in the vicinity of the plant to preserve evidence.
Any exceedance of the maximum permitted activity tax is generally notifiable. It was reported to the Lower Saxony Ministry for the Environment, Energy, Building and Climate Protection as a supervisory authority in accordance with the Nuclear Safety Officer and Reporting Ordinance as an event of category E (urgent).
