The New York Mets seem like are in the lead of the race to get the services of pitcher Trevor Bauer, and things could be clearing up due to the pace that the conversations between both parties are having.
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reported that New York’s current offer to Bauer would be for three or four yearsBut so far the average annual contract value would not jeopardize Gerrit Cole’s record (36 million per year on average).
As Heyman points out, there is still some mystery around what Bauer would prefer, a contract for many dollars a year for a few years, or a longer contract that could be on par with or above the more expensive deals in terms of total value.
Mets’ offer to Bauer thought 3-4 years with opt-outs and less than $36M AAV record. Dodgers could have similar type interest but unlikely to go long. Some teams believe Bauer seeks much longer deal, and pitching comps they’ve used are long deals: Cole (324M) and Strasburg (245M).

The economic situation could make it less likely that a team will commit to spending a total figure similar to those agreed by Cole and Stephen Strasburg last winterEspecially since the Dodgers – who according to Heyman are New York’s biggest rivals right now – would prefer deals for a few years.
Bauer comes from achieving a 1.73 ERA, the best in the National League and the one he won the Cy Young with, in 11 starts in 2020, in which he had a ratio of 100 strikeouts to 17 walks in 73 innings. With information from lasmayores.com
