Report: The level of conflict in the world has increased since the outbreak of the pandemic

Conflicts have risen in the world since the pandemic broke out, according to the latest Global Peace Index report released on Thursday.

The report prepared by the Institute of Economics and Peace, which assesses the situation in 2020, states that the level of conflicts has increased for the ninth time in 12 years.

Although the overall level of conflict and terrorism has declined in 2020, political instability has increased and violent demonstrations have intensified, said Steve Killeley, the institute’s founder.

From January 2020 to April this year, the Global Peace Index recorded more than 5,000 violent incidents related to the new coronavirus pandemic.

25 countries have seen more violent demonstrations and only eight have seen a decrease.

The worst situation is in Belarus, Russia and Myanmar, where authorities have violently cracked down on protesters.

However, in many parts of the world, homicide rates, the number of people killed in terrorist attacks and the perception of crime have fallen sharply, although the situation varies considerably from region to region.

Iceland is still the most peaceful country in the world, maintaining this position since 2008. New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal and Slovenia join the top of the index. In this index, Latvia is ranked 35th in the competition of 163 countries, which is one place lower than a year ago. Estonia is in 30th place, but Lithuania is in 37th place.

Europe as a whole is the most peaceful region, but the index points to increased political instability there as well.-

For the third year in a row, Afghanistan has been declared the most troubled country in the world, followed by Yemen, Syria, South Sudan and Iraq. Russia is the tenth most troubled country in the world.

The Global Peace Index is the world’s leading annual peace survey conducted by the Institute for Economics and Peace. It ranks 163 countries and territories of the world according to their level of peace, covering 99.7% of the world’s population. The study includes an extensive analysis of peace trends, its economic value and ways to develop a peaceful society.
