Report: Schalke 04 examines the sale of an e-sports starting place – million-dollar proceeds possible

The misery at FC Schalke 04 is becoming more and more serious: relegation from the Bundesliga hardly seems to be prevented. The traditional club is lonely and alone at the bottom of the table, the gap to the saving bank is already nine points. And the change of coach to Christian Gross did not turn the trend: Schalke could only win one game under Gross – and that was eight game days ago. The planning for the second division should be in full swing in the background. And since the financial situation at the Revierklub is still tense, those responsible could now apparently take an unusual measure.

Like the French The team reports, Schalke is apparently considering selling the starting place of one of its esports teams. Accordingly, one could sell the starting place in the “League of Legends European Championship” (LEC) in order to ease the financial burden a little. And for some, perhaps surprisingly, the sale of the starting place could bring in up to 20 million euros, as it goes on – money that could be used well for a change after the season.

However, it is probably not just about focusing more on the soccer division at the expense of the esports department: membership in the LEC should be a losing business for the teams. The companies in the e-sports series lose several hundred thousand euros per year due to costs for personnel, rents and equipment. For Schalke, who were shaken by the Corona crisis and who even took out a million dollar loan including a guarantee from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia last year and who recently received early sponsorship payments, an absurdity – especially since the Gelsenkirchen company’s core business is still the Representing football department.
