A new study published by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has shed light on the immense potential of mountain tourism. The report reveals that mountain tourism represents between nine and 16 per cent of international tourist arrivals worldwide, with between 195 to 375 million people visiting mountainous areas in 2019 alone. The UNWTO also noted that these areas are home to over a billion people, some of the poorest and most isolated in the world, who could potentially benefit greatly from mountain tourism in the future. Mountains have always been a popular destination for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and those interested in local cultures and biodiversity. In 2019, the ten most mountainous countries only received eight per cent of international tourist arrivals, suggesting a huge potential for growth in the sector. By measuring the volume of visitors to the mountains, and implementing sustainable development practices, mountain tourism could generate economic benefits, create opportunities for local communities, and help to preserve natural resources and culture. The report calls for greater awareness of the socio-economic importance of mountain tourism, and policies that support small and medium-sized businesses and green investments in infrastructure and digitisation of tourism services.
