Xinhua Finance | Report shows: Nearly 50% of global carbon-neutral technology transfer occurs in the energy field
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, September 23 (Anna, Wang Shengxian) A report released by Tsinghua University’s Carbon Neutral Research Institute on the 22nd showed that nearly 50% of global carbon neutral technology transfer occurs in the energy field, and more than 50% of funds are used in renewable energy Investments in energy and grids.
The report, titled “2023 Global Carbon Neutrality Annual Progress Report,” provides a comprehensive assessment of the carbon neutrality progress of 197 countries around the world.

“Facing the increasingly severe challenge of climate change, countries around the world must unite and collaborate. Identifying the opportunities and challenges we will face in the current carbon neutralization process is of great significance to accelerating the global climate governance process and achieving a just transition.” Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, He Kebin, director of the Carbon Neutrality Research Institute of Tsinghua University, said at the report conference.
The report shows that as of September 2023, more than 150 countries around the world have made carbon neutrality commitments, covering more than 80% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, GDP and population. Energy is the area with the most significant progress in carbon neutrality, with 127 countries having set targets related to renewable energy power generation.
The report also found that energy transition is still a huge challenge for all countries. Currently, less than a quarter of countries have non-fossil energy supply accounting for more than 50%, and 87% of countries still have fossil energy supply accounting for more than 80%.
In terms of green technology development and promotion, according to this report, current carbon-neutral international technology transfer has problems such as a low proportion of hard technology and insufficient technology transfer in non-energy fields.
Achieving carbon peak carbon neutrality is an extensive and profound economic and social systemic change. “We hope that through the release of the report, we can promote the attention of all parties to carbon neutrality actions, accelerate the dual-wheel drive of technology and capital, strengthen mutually beneficial and win-win international cooperation, improve the global governance system, promote global equitable transformation, and achieve sustainable development. .” said Wang Can, the lead author of the report and director of the Synergy Research Center for Pollution Reduction and Carbon Reduction at Tsinghua University’s Carbon Neutral Institute.
