According to a media report, US President Joe Biden could announce as early as next week that he would like to run again in the 2024 presidential election. The “Washington Post” reported on Thursday evening (local time), citing unnamed employees, that the publication of a corresponding video was planned for Tuesday.
At the same time, according to the newspaper, the sources emphasized that the announcement could also be delayed. The New York Times reported that Biden had invited donors to Washington for the election campaign at the end of next week.
The Democrat had repeatedly signaled in the past that he would like to run for a second term. However, there has been no official announcement so far. Most recently, on the sidelines of his trip to Ireland, he said about a week ago: “We will announce it relatively soon.” It was the President’s clearest commitment to date.
Given his advanced age, however, even within Biden’s own party there are reservations as to whether he would be the best candidate. At the next presidential election in 2024, Biden would be 81 years old, and at the start of a second term 82. However, if Biden officially enters the race for the White House, he should not face any significant competition from the Democrats.
Prominent contenders for the Republican presidential nomination have so far been ex-President Donald Trump and former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley.
