Benfica continued their perfect entry into the Champions League and claimed victory in the second match. They beat Atlético Madrid 4-0 at home and thus remain 100% in the millionaire competition. For Atlético, who beat Leipzig at home in the first round, it is the first away defeat in eleven matches.
The home side came into the match like a hurricane and were close to taking the lead early on when Vangelis Pavlidis headed dangerously from the edge of the box, but Jan Oblak was up against it and cleared the effort. In the 13th minute, however, the home team took the lead when Fredrik Aursnes passed to an uncovered Kerem Akturkoglu, who cleared the ball to the post from close range.
Akturkoglu’s goal was only the sixth goal Diego Simeone’s side had conceded in ten games this season and it seemed to wake him up. Samuel Lino had a promising chance but shot over from a good position. However, shortly before the half-time break, it was the home side who could have doubled the lead. Pavlidis hit a shot from the small area, but his attempt was stopped by the post.
However, Orli did not have to wait long for the second goal, as VAR intervened shortly after the break and awarded a penalty for a foul on Pavlidis. Ángel Di María took it, who calmly sent the ball into the net and increased the lead to 2:0. Minutes later, the Argentinian had another chance when he went one-on-one, but his shot was saved by Oblak.
Atlético could not recover even after further threats from Benfica, and this was punished by Alexander Bah, who made it 3-0 from a corner kick. After Bah’s goal, the visitors completely surrendered, and Benfica added another goal from the penalty spot to a helpless Jan Oblak thanks to Orkun Kokcu. The home team thus continued their impressive streak, as they have already won nine games in a row at the Estádio da Luz.
