A shooting on the historic Coney Island boardwalk in Brooklyn left five people injured early Sunday morning.informed the authorities.
The events took place around 2:00 am, when a shooter began shooting at a large number of people who participated in an alleged impromptu party, Telemundo 47 reported.
The New York Police Department said first responders helped transport two women and a man to the hospital, one of whom was seriously injured and currently remains in critical condition. Two other people made it to local hospitals on their own. According to police sources, the victims were between 19 and 36 years old.
So far there have been no arrests related to the incident, and the motive for the shooting is under investigation. More than two dozen bullets were recovered from the crime scene.
The shooting comes after New York Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell last Thursday announced that there is a double-digit decrease in murders and shootings in the city during June.
In June, murders were down 12% compared to the same period last year.. It was also noted that shootings were down 13% last month compared to June 2021, the NYPD said.
Through July 3, the annual homicide rate in New York City was down 9.9% to 210 homicides compared to the same period in 2021, according to NYPD crime statistics.
Meanwhile, the number of shooting victims has fallen 9.1% compared to the same period last year, according to official data.
