The mammoth skeleton was excavated in 1862 in Hoboken. “At that time, they were building a fortress. While digging, they found the skeleton of a mammoth in the ground. They put those bones in a coffin and sent them to the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences,” said district alderman for Culture Tom. De Boeck in Hoboken.
“Since then, that skeleton has wandered all over Belgium, from depot to museum to temporary exhibitions. After 160 years, we thought it was time to put the mammoth on display in Hoboken, where it was once found at Fort 8. DeBoeck says.
