The German automobile concern Volkswagen introduced the form of a small electric car ID.Life, which should start selling in 2025 for about 20,000 euros (about half a million crowns). The company said the new car should make electric propulsion available to a wider group of motorists. Volkswagen’s goal is to replace the American competitor Tesla as the largest manufacturer of electric cars in the world.
The presentation of the concept of the new car took place as part of a press day before Tuesday’s opening of the Munich Motor Show. The new car, which will be produced by the Spanish Seat division, is similar in size to the Volkswagen Polo model. It measures 4.1 meters in length, less than 1.9 meters in width and 1.6 meters in height. “ID.Life is our vision of a new generation of fully electric urban mobility,” said Volkswagen head boss Ralf Brandstätter at the presentation of the car.
The ID.Life concept is intended to give rise to an electric small car in the city, but with a raised body in the style of crossovers. It will thus be included under the already sold electric cars ID.4 and ID.3. It uses the VW modular platform for electric cars on behalf of MEB. The concept has an electric motor with an output of 172 kW and a battery with a capacity of 57 kWh, which is to ensure the car’s range of up to 400 km on a single charge.
There are many details about the concept, such as a game console and a projector for projecting films. The front bench can be moved back so that the crew can comfortably watch movies from the sofa, for example. “The customer of the future will not just want to get from point A to point B. He will be much more interested in what experiences the car can offer him,” said Brandstätter.
An interesting detail that indicates trends in the automotive industry is a completely clean dashboard without built-in displays with a multimedia interface. The driver will only place his smartphone here, which will provide all the functions. The car also has a cut-off steering wheel in the style of “rams” like the innovated Tesla Model S. After all, Volkswagen wants to compete primarily with Tesla is well known.
The ID.Life concept is to create a serial car in 2025, and VW promises to cost 20,000 euros, ie about half a million crowns. Volkswagen wants to increase the share of fully electric cars in its total car sales to at least 70 percent in Europe and at least 50 percent in North America and China by 2030, Reuters reported.
