Since April 2023, closures of hospital emergency services have been recurring in Gironde. The regional health agency (ARS) of Nouvelle-Aquitaine believes that the situation “has never been so serious”. There is an average shortage of 30% of doctors in the 15 emergency departments in Gironde, hampering continuity of service. The reception conditions for patients, like the working conditions of health personnel, are alarming. On the outskirts of the department, the emergency services of the Arès, Blaye, Langon, Lesparre and Sainte-Foy-La-Grande hospitals close regularly.

For example, in Langon, emergency rooms continue to close despite the alert to the Minister of Hospital Personnel during his visit in April. In Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, the situation is extremely serious with, between April and May 2023, more than 17 days of closure. Patients from these hospitals are redirected to the university hospital center (CHU) of Bordeaux, which is now forced to regulate access to emergency services.

This summer, in Gironde, with the increase in attendance at tourist sites and the increased unavailability of staff, due to lack of additional resources, the ARS plans to “undress Paul to dress Pierre”. A “pink plan” is planned at the Langon maternity ward, as well as new emergency closures at Langon hospital and a closure of the emergency department in Sainte-Foy-La-Grande for several weeks. This critical situation is a risk factor for the health of the inhabitants of Gironde and worsens the already degraded working conditions of health personnel.
