Rep. Mike Lawler Slams Colleges for Allowing Antisemitic Protests on Campus

Congressman Condemns Colleges for Allowing Antisemitic Protests on Campuses

Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., voiced his criticism against colleges for permitting antisemitic protests on their campuses. He cited that these protests were being carried out under the guise of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. Lawler’s strong statement comes at a time when students at renowned colleges across the nation are establishing “Gaza Solidarity” encampments, urging their respective institutions to sever ties with or cease support for Israel.

Antisemitic Protests at Prominent Colleges

This nationwide movement has gained traction and influence at esteemed institutions such as Columbia, Yale, MIT, UC Berkeley, University of Southern California, Princeton, Harvard, Stanford, Northwestern University, Vanderbilt University, University of Michigan, University of North Carolina, University of Virginia, and others. The university officials responsible for maintaining the campuses have fallen short in their duty to prioritize students’ safety and facilitate a free exchange of ideas. Instead, students have witnessed antisemitic rhetoric, which poses a direct threat to Jewish students.

Cracking Down on Colleges

Congressman Lawler expressed his belief that immediate action should be taken to combat this issue. He underscored the urgency for colleges to implement a clear definition of antisemitism and enforce it rigorously. Lawler firmly stated that if institutions do not fulfill their responsibility in addressing and ceasing racist and antisemitic activities, they should bear consequences.

“In this regard, institutions failing to enforce proper measures should be stripped of federal dollars, which includes student aid. That’s why I have introduced the Stop Antisemitism on College Campuses Act—a vital piece of legislation targeting institutions of higher learning,” Lawler conveyed.

Unequal Treatment?

Congressman Lawler implicitly questioned whether these colleges would have taken proactive measures if the ongoing protests targeted the Black, Hispanic, or LGBTQ+ communities. He insinuated a disparity in the response and demanded equal treatment in safeguarding the rights and well-being of all students, regardless of their backgrounds.
