People Power Party lawmaker Ha Tae-kyung (3rd term, Haeundae Gap, Busan) announced on the 7th that he would run for office in the Seoul region in the general election in April next year. Ahead of the next general election, Rep. Ha is the first among leading lawmakers from the Yeongnam region, the ruling party’s dominant region, to declare candidacy in the metropolitan area and rugged areas.
Representative Ha said at a National Assembly press conference this morning, “I will leave my hometown of Haeundae and run in Seoul in next year’s general election. If we win in Seoul, our party will have the effect of winning two seats.” He explained the background, saying, “It is because of my loyalty to become the grain of our party’s victory in the general election, especially in the metropolitan area. I hope that small actions will become the grain of the ruling party’s restoration of responsible politics and our party’s victory in the general election.”
Rep. Ha is classified as a non-Yun faction within the ruling party, and has served three terms in the Haeundae Gap region since the 19th general election.
As Representative Ha is the first in the party to make a decision, attention is being paid to whether a certain wind of innovation will blow in the ruling party, which is struggling with the issue of personnel reform in the Yeongnam region.
Gyeongnam (PK), including Busan, and Daegu/Gyeongbuk (TK) are the ruling party’s ‘homelands’ and are home to many senior lawmakers who are mainstream within the party. Representative Jang Je-won (3rd term, Busan Sasang) is a representative member of the Daseon and pro-Yun faction in the Busan region.
Regarding the current situation of the ruling party, Rep. Ha pointed out, “We achieved a change of government last year, but the unstable ruling and opposition parties are only amplifying unnecessary conflict and antagonism,” and added, “There must be a change starting from the ruling party, which has unlimited responsibility for national affairs.” He then emphasized, “We must set aside vested interests and lead the general election to victory by looking only at the people and trusting that they will lead the government.”
Meanwhile, regarding the specific area for running in Seoul, he said, “I decided only on Seoul, and I haven’t thought about it in detail yet.” He said, “We will continue to discuss with the party, and now we have the intention to go wherever the party calls us. I told the representative and the floor leader this morning. Their response was, ‘As expected, it’s Ha Tae-kyung. Thank you.'” .
There is talk inside and outside the party that Rep. Ha could run for Mapo-eul, the constituency of Chung Cheong-rae, a top member of the Democratic Party of Korea. The current Mapo-eul Party Council Chairman is former lawmaker Kim Seong-dong, who worked together with lawmaker Ha in the Bareun Party.
