The rent increase of 4.7 percent is considerably higher than in previous years. High inflation plays a role. Life in general has become considerably more expensive in the past year. And that also translates into higher rents.
But rents are also rising because there are increased demand for rental properties. And that is due to the high real estate prices and rising interest rates. “Interest rates for home loans are rising. It is becoming even more difficult for some people to buy a home. That group therefore stays on the rental market longer, which only increases the scarcity on the rental market,” says Kristophe Thijs of CIB. “Real estate agencies tell us that they sometimes have more than 50 prospective tenants for energy-efficient homes.”
