Surplus and reuse

Developed by trading and investment company Sumitomo Corporation, the service has just been launched for a trial period that runs until August 31 next year. During the period, the company, in collaboration with Japan Airlines, will assess how the concept works in practice.

– Our aim is to create an opportunity for travelers to make use of local alternatives in relation to their clothing, food and accommodation, and through this we can make both holidays and business trips more sustainable than today, explains Sumitomo Corporation according to StandBy.dk

Measures reduced CO2 emissions

While Sumitomo Corporation is responsible for the practical aspects of the scheme, Japan Airlines will map the effect this has on the weight and CO2 emissions of the flights.

Japan Airlines has already calculated that by carrying 10 kilograms less luggage on a flight from New York to Tokyo, you save 7.5 kilograms of CO2 because the planes have to use more fuel to transport the luggage.

7.5 kilograms of CO2, on the other hand, is equivalent to what you would save the climate by banning the use of hair dryers for ten minutes a day – for a whole 78 days, JAL believes.

The airline also points out that each of us has 7.5 items of clothing that have not been used over the course of an entire year, and that 66 percent of the world’s clothing production ends up in landfills or incinerators.
