Rent closed border – Here they break into Sweden

– It is almost impossible to move these by hand. You have to use engine power, says Arne Bjørklund, operations manager in Viken county municipality.

He has a problem that increasingly steals time, resources and attention.

Ever since the end of January this year, it has only been allowed to cross the border between Norway and Sweden at manned border crossings with a test station.

Now, however, it may seem that corona fatigue is causing some to take the law into their own hands.

– The county roads towards Sweden are closed for one reason, namely because it is not allowed to cross the border. But in recent days, we have experienced several cases where the barriers have been moved so that it is possible to drive through, Bjørklund tells Børsen.

– Woody

The border barriers consist of large car tires that are tethered together with a chain. Heavy enough that it is not only a matter of easing the barriers away by hand, but at the same time safer in traffic than concrete blocks because the deck piles will give way in the event of a collision, the operations manager explains.

For Viken County Municipality, the problem has become so big that it is now the end of patience.

– When the barriers are moved, our operating contractors must move out to put everything back in place. It’s a little frustrating and really woody. They have a lot of other things they would rather spend their time on. In short, it is a very unnecessary use of time and money. We will therefore report all such incidents in the future, says Bjørklund.

More inquiries

He assumes that recently changed rules for entry into Sweden may be a contributing factor to the barriers being physically challenged.

For entry into Norway, the same strict rules apply that were introduced in January. Basically, there is testing and quarantine upon entry, with some limited exceptions. From 3 June, vaccinated and protected people will not have to spend time in quarantine hotels, for example.

For entry into Sweden, on the other hand, all restrictions on entry from Norway were lifted from 31 May.

– So in recent days we have received a number of inquiries from the public with questions about whether these physically closed border crossings can be used again. And you can not do that, says Bjørklund.

All seven border crossings on county roads for which Viken County Municipality is responsible are thus as closed to physical traffic as they have been since January.

The exception is county road 106 at Bjørbekk, which can be used between 8 and 15.30. Otherwise, border crossings (into Viken) must take place on the E18 at Ørje or the E6 at Svinesund.
