Sid S., the husband of food blogger Rens Kroes, has been sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for raping a woman in 2016. The court in Amsterdam decided this. Two weeks ago, the Public Prosecution Service demanded an unconditional prison sentence of four years against S. S. must also pay 3,345 euros in legal costs and compensation of more than 10,000 euros to the victim, consisting of both material and immaterial damage.
The non-material damage includes post-traumatic stress disorder that the victim still suffers from eight years after the incident. She is receiving therapy for this. The victim also had to take HIV inhibitors after the incident. S.’s actions also caused the victim to experience feelings of fear and insecurity that continue to this day, the court ruled.
S. was already sentenced to two years in prison in 2019. He appealed against this. The sentence he received on appeal is therefore higher than the sentence he initially received.
Immediate capture
After the demand two weeks ago, the court took S. into temporary custody. The Public Prosecution Service asked for immediate arrest because S. would be a flight risk. S. has indicated that he wants to live in Ivory Coast, but the Netherlands does not have a legal assistance treaty with that country. S. was born in Ivory Coast.
The case surrounding S. has been going on for years. The appeal was initially scheduled to be filed in March last year, but was postponed because the defense wanted to hear witnesses. The appeal would then be filed in December last year. Then it was postponed because S.’s father died just before the hearing.
