The famous Russian photographer Dmitry Markov died in the Pskov region. About it reports publication “Pskov Province” with references to Markov’s friends. The photographer became famous for his photographs of life in Russian regions. He was 42 years old.
Markov was born in the Moscow region into a dysfunctional family. His passion for photography in his youth helped him give up alcohol and drugs. He became a photo reporter and collaborated with many Russian media. His photographs have received a number of professional awards, including the Grand Prix of the Silver Camera competition and the Tuning Fork Award named after Anna Politkovskaya.
As a reporter, Markov traveled a lot to the regions of Russia. He began volunteering and in 2005 moved to the Pskov region, where he worked with orphans and disadvantaged teenagers. He took part in charitable rehabilitation programs for drug addicts.
Markov actively explored the modern possibilities of documentary photography, switching from professional photographic equipment to cameras on mobile devices. He has released two photo albums: “Draft” (2017) and “Russia Squared” (2021).
Markov wrote about their photographs: “They often say that I show a certain Russia (instead of “certain”, substitute any epithet – real, deep, provincial, etc.). As if there is one Russia in which they live, and another in which “Everyone else lives. Of course, there are city bubbles where it’s easy to fly away from reality and take running water for granted. But the truth is that everyone comes from there – from these pumps, five-story buildings and wooden walkways.”
