Photographer Erwin Olaf has died at the age of 64. His management reported this on behalf of his family on Wednesday. Olaf underwent a lung transplant a few weeks ago.
“He was getting better, but suddenly became unwell and resuscitation was to no avail,” the statement on behalf of the family reads.
Olaf’s work was known for themes such as homosexuality and aggression. Olaf’s photos often contain a provocative style with a lot of nudity. The photographer worked for, among others The New York Times and the clothing brand Diesel.
Olaf has received prestigious awards for his photographs, including the Johannes Vermeer Prize, the Dutch state prize for the arts.

The photographer had a special bond with the Dutch royal family. In 2013, Olaf designed the new Dutch euro coins featuring the portrait of King Willem-Alexander, who was inaugurated that year.
Four years later he also made the official portraits of the royal family. In 2019 he was appointed knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
