Renowned journalist and documentary filmmaker John Pilger passes away at 81

– His journalism and documentaries were praised all over the world, but for his family he was mostly a wonderful father, grandfather and partner. Rest in peace, says the statement.

Pilger died on 30 December, on the penultimate day of the year. He was born in Australia but has lived in the UK since the 1960s.

He worked for several decades as a foreign correspondent for the Daily Mirror newspaper, where he covered Southeast Asia, among other things. His documentary films and reportage books from Cambodia and East Timor are particularly renowned.

The veteran journalist has received a number of awards and honors throughout his career, and is one of only two people to have received the prestigious British journalist award Journalist of the Year twice.

In recent years, Pilger has been involved in the case of Julian Assange, and he has, among other things, questioned the rape accusations against the Wikileaks founder in Sweden, writes TT.

The veteran journalist received the Sofie prize in 2003, which is awarded by the foundation of the well-known Norwegian writer Jostein Gaarder and his wife Siri Dannevig.
