People who don’t get vaccinated put not only themselves, but everyone at risk. “Unvaccinated people are variant factories.” That’s what Professor William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University Medical Center told CNN.

“The more people who are not vaccinated, the more chances the virus has to multiply. Every time the virus multiplies, it may mutate into a variant that can hit harder.” Most of the changes that result from mutations are usually harmless or can even weaken the virus, but some mutations give that virus an evolutionary advantage. Including: more contagious, more resistant to vaccines… The virus particles with that advantage will displace the others within the body of the infected person, if the infected person infects someone else with that mutant and he in turn passes it on again, then we talk a new variant. Vaccines are a brake on infections, circulation and therefore the chances that a new variant will appear.
