Renowned Film Director Pedro Chaskel Passes Away: A Founding Member of Cineteca de la U. de Chile

The Cineteca de la U. de Chile reported the death, an institution of which he was a founding member. “He was an educator who dedicated an important part of his activity to the training of new generations of filmmakers,” they published on his social networks.

This morning it was announced death of film directornational documentary filmmaker and editor, Pedro Chaskel (91), who was known to be the precursor of the New Chilean Cinema.

The news was reported through the Instagram of the Cinematheque of the University of Chile, an institution of which Chaskel was a founding member. So far there is no further information about the causes of the filmmaker’s death.

“With infinite sadness we regret to inform that Pedro Chaskel, filmmaker, film club member and founding member of the Cineteca de la Universidad de Chile has passed away,” was the message published on the social network of the Cineteca de la Casa de Bello.

Likewise, they pointed out that the work of the prominent film director “makes him not only one of the most important directors of Chilean documentary filmsince he was also an educator who dedicated an important part of his activity to training of new generations of filmmakers“.

“He had numerous recognitions for his films and his legacy, including the Rectoral Medal of the University of Chile (2006), the Order of artistic and cultural merit ‘Pablo Neruda’, National Council of Culture and the Arts of the Government of Chile ( 2005), the Pedro Sienna Award for cinematographic career from the National Council of Culture and the Arts of the Government of Chile (2009) and the Altazor Award for his contribution to cinematographic art (2009),” they explained.
