Renovations of Third Avenue are completed – it is safer today, they say

The Department of Transportation is celebrating the completion of renovations to Third Avenue that are said to have made it a safer thoroughfare.

The new design includes more wide bike lanes along the 40 blocks between East 59th Street and East 96th Street.

“This ‘Complete Street’ is now complete 🎉

“Our major traffic safety project on 3rd Ave (E 59th St to E 96th St) with redesigns of every intersection, a 1.9-mile protected #BikeNYC lane, and a new displaced bus lane with more reliable service for 50 thousand daily passengers is now finished!” writes the DOT in a message on social networks.

The project is part of the Complete Streets Act. This legislation, enacted in 2011, requires state, local, and county agencies to consider the convenience and mobility of all users when developing transportation projects.

The stretch will reduce speeding and dangerous intersections.

Third Avenue recorded a total of 37 serious injuries and seven traffic fatalities between 2016 and 2022.

The design will also offer a faster and more reliable bus service for the 50,000 users of lines M-98, M-101, 102 and 103.
