“Rennes to Limit Traffic to 30 km/h in Almost All Streets from September 2023”

Traffic in the city of Rennes will be limited to 30 km from September 4, 2023. The measure, voted on by the municipal council on May 15, meets road safety and better sharing of the road objectives.

From September 1, it will be necessary to slow down: almost the entire city of Rennes goes to 30 km / hour. The decision was taken by the municipal council this Monday, May 15, 2023. It complements the other measures taken in recent months to better share public space, between cars, buses, bicycles, scooters and pedestrians: the installation of a limited traffic zone in the historic center, the deployment of continuous and secure cycle paths, the opening of the metro line b and the new bus network…

Basically, Rennes are already used to reducing their speed. Today, it is limited to 30 km/hour in 3/4 of the streets. But from September 4, this speed will be generalized in 95% of the streets. That is a total of 600 km. Only the main axes that allow you to enter and leave the city (access to the ring road) and to bypass the city center will remain at 50 km / hour.

The city at 30

All the streets of Rennes pass at 30 km/hour, with the exception of the main access roads (roads in blue on the map).

The city at 30km/h is a small effort required of motorists. On a one-kilometre trip, this represents an 18-second increase in travel time.

Why a city at 30?

It is a question of reversing the logic: where, before, the default speed was 50 km/h except exceptions at 30 km/h, the rule becomes the speed at 30 km/h except on some axes where it remains at 50 km/h.

More and more cities have moved to 30 km/h in recent years. Their experience shows improvements in terms of safety or quality of life.

  • Fewer accidents : the braking distance is halved compared to a speed of 50 km/h, the driver has a wider field of vision and a better ability to anticipate. Like many cities in Europe (Brussels, Milan, Bilbao) and in France (Montpellier, Lyon, Nantes, Grenoble, Paris and, more recently Lorient or Saint-Brieuc) the measure has made it possible to see the number of accidents decrease.
  • More serenity : the reduction in the speed of motorists makes it possible to make the movement of pedestrians safer, in particular children, the elderly or people with disabilities.

And in the Metropolis…

Twelve municipalities in the Metropolis have already implemented the principle of the City of 30: Brécé, Betton, Thorigné-Fouillard, L’Hermitage, Cintré, etc. Chantepie, Saint-Jacques-de-la-Lande, Chavagne, Vezin-le-Coquet and Rennes join these municipalities. In the Breton capital, the measure will be effective on September 4, 2023.
