Rennes Municipal Council Launches Green Revolution: A Bold Approach to Tackling Global Warming

In January, the Rennes municipal council dared to take an innovative approach. She decided to integrate more trees and vegetation into our beautiful Rennes setting. This green revolution, which takes off this Thursday, February 29, promises to transform the face of the Breton capital. But she doesn’t just beautify the city: she boldly tackles the challenges of global warming.

This winter, 17 trees will be planted in the city center, after the necessary adjustment of underground infrastructure and roads. Today, a white cherry tree inaugurated this program on rue du Chapter, announcing the arrival of other species such as the “red helmet” locust tree and a variety of shrubs and perennial plants. These new shoots will adorn several symbolic places in Rennes in the days to come (rues de la Visitation and des Fossés, places Saint-Michel and Rallier du Baty,).

This planting movement is part of a broader plan which, by 2025, will enrich the heart of Rennes with many other species. Iconic sites such as the Portes Mordelaises (24 trees), Place du Champ-Jacquet (25); Place des Lices (10) and the surroundings of the Hôtel-Dieu (24) will strengthen the city’s green network.

This approach is an extension of a landscape policy initiated in 2020 by Rennes, which has already seen Rennes welcome nearly 90 new trees in its center. This project reflects the municipal determination to shape a space where nature reigns supreme, for the pleasure of the eyes, the well-being of the people of Rennes, and the ecological benefit.

In this program, green investment is certainly notable. A budget of €280,000 is planned for 2024, and an annual financial commitment of €200,000 until 2026, without forgetting the support of Rennes Métropole for road improvements, provided with €70,000 per year. By planting nearly 300 trees by 2026, and aiming for 500 by 2030, Rennes is affirming its green urban renewal.
