Businesses and professionals near the route of line B of the Rennes metro are strongly impacted by its long-term shutdown. Impacts which are already strongly measured on turnover.
The Cleunay district has been greatly opened up by the arrival of metro line B. But since December and the repeated breakdowns of the metro, it has been a big step backwards according to traders.
At the pharmacy on rue Jules Lallemand, the pharmacist admits to being “returned to attendance levels before the arrival of the metro. That’s 50 fewer customers per day. Afterwards, I tell myself that it’s for people’s safety, it helps me take a step back”explains Thiem Nguyen philosophically.
In the same street, Dominique Bunel, the tobacconist, makes the same observation: “The metro stop is a big loss of income, around 100 to 120 fewer customers per day. With an average basket of 15 euros, I’ll let you do the calculation! It’s not complicated, we are right next to the Cleunay station. If customers no longer pass by, there is no act of purchase. In this case, customers will buy their packs of cigarettes further away.”.

Throughout the entire route of line B, we hear the same testimonies. Between Rennes and Saint-Jacques de la Lande, in the Courrouze district, emerging from the ground in anticipation of the arrival of line B, we look grim. On Place Jeanne Laurent, the owner of the Brodin bakery does not mince his words: “We opened in September 2021 in anticipation of the installation of the metro. With the shutdown of line B, on is really impacted. We lose 200 to 300 euros per day. We touched people who passed by because they were going to find the metro. This is not taken into account at all by the metropolis. And what’s more, we don’t have any parking spaces. So there, it’s a double penalty.”testifies Carl Brodin.
Just a stone’s throw away, the Sobhi Sport store makes the same observation: “I estimate the loss of turnover at -20, -30%. We have a lunchtime clientele that we no longer reach, people who came because their business was 5 minutes away by metro. In the evening, those who are in the car, as it’s jammed, they don’t have time to make a detour. We feel abandoned. It’s catastrophic!” selon Yannick Carro.

Faced with this feeling of abandonment, a meeting was held on Thursday January 18 with the vice-presidency of the Rennes metropolis and elected officials from the municipalities affected by the breakdown of metro line B, it was decided that the park and ride ViaSilva would reopen sometime next week, with open and free access.
