Rennes: Julien Stéphan explains the reasons for his return

After the departure of Bruno Genesio from his position as coach of Stade Rennais, his successor, Julien Stéphan, was presented on Monday alongside his management. Back with the Rouge et Noir after an experience in Strasbourg, the 43-year-old coach says he is “fresh and motivated” to turn around a team in deep doubt in the championship.

Back to the future in Rennes. Julien Stéphan is back in business. More than two years after leaving Stade Rennais, the 43-year-old coach returns to the bench of the Breton club. With Bruno Genesio gone, the Rennes management called on the man who led the first team between 2018 and 2021, offering him a Coupe de France (2019), to get out of a sporting crisis (Rennes is 13th in L1).

“It’s a great joy to come back,” he declared Monday during his presentation. “I would like to greet and congratulate Bruno Genesio. I have the chance to succeed a great coach, who has done great things. as a spectator, I enjoyed seeing the Stade Rennais matches recently, with great quality of play.” Although he had been without a club since the start of the year and his departure from Strasbourg, Julien Stéphan took advantage of this period without responsibility to recharge his batteries. “It’s fortunate, I’m coming out of 10 months of inactivity. I’m fresh, available and motivated,” he assures.

“I am no longer the same as I was 4 or 5 years ago”

On this feedback, Julien Stéphan indicates that the deal was concluded quickly. “Since last night (Sunday), I have felt support from everyone, from the shareholder and the people who are there on a daily basis. I feel and perceive this support. This is what motivated me to accept the challenge. ” A return which inevitably promises to be different from his first visit to Ille-et-Vilaine: “I am no longer the same as I was 4 or 5 years ago. I have had time to analyze these last few months.”

His first challenge will be to restore confidence to a group which has not won in Ligue 1 since the derby against Nantes (3-1) on October 1. The following ? “We need to revitalize the situation and improve accounting performance, continues Stéphan who kicked in on the transfer window. These are the objectives assigned. There is no objective of places, of points. We are big people and intelligent to discuss at the end of the season. I accepted the mission with full knowledge of the facts. The pleasure of coming back, the pride of being asked was enough for our joy. Time to work and step by step.” First meeting, Sunday afternoon (5:05 p.m.) against Reims at Roazhon Park.
