Bruno Genesio is starting to get impatient with recruitment for central defense. The technician hopes to see reinforcements arrive quickly.
Stade Rennais must deal with a very weak central defense this summer. Nayef Aguerd has joined West Ham in a €35m transfer and has yet to be replaced. As for Warmed Omari, the other holder of last season, he suffers from pubalgia and will not return to the pitch until October. Bruno Genesio remains in solidarity with its leaders, but does not mask a small concern either.
“We know that a hinge needs automation”
“We know very well that we have needs in this position. For the moment, I am working with the players we have, it is on them that we must rely, it is them that we must advance. It’s a little annoying, we know that a hinge needs automation. […] These are things that I do not control, it is useless to fall into catastrophism. They will arrive. When, I don’t know, but they will come.”, told the Breton technician to the media. The former Lyonnais does not want “falling too late as was the case last season”.
In 2021-2022, Stade Rennais was indeed 16e on the evening of the 6e day, having three defeats on the clock. According to The Team, its leaders have in turn tried to recruit Jason Denayer (free, ex-OL), Abdou Diallo (Paris-SG), Samuel Umtiti (FC Barcelona), Morato (Benfica), Alexander Djiku (Strasbourg), Blaise Kouassi (Bayern Munich), Kim Min-Jae (Fenerbahçe) and Josip Sutalo (Dinamo Zagreb). None of them have arrived yet.
There are two and a half weeks left in Rennes to correct the situation and strengthen the axis of defense, before the start of the Championship. In the meantime, Bruno Genesio relies on Loïc Badé and Jeanuel Belocian. The first performed well, while the second looks promising, despite being only 17 years old. However, the Rouge et Noir coach would not consider establishing this duo in the coming months.
