Six tries conceded, a 9th defeat this season but positive signals, Marmande’s Sunday was surprising. It all started during the warm-up, when the two teams began to exchange their first balls by encroaching on the field occupied in the preamble by an Elite 1 match between Rennes and Blagnac. Then, when the locals chose to place six forwards on the bench to face the density of the Lot-et-Garonne pack.
In this context, the Rennais were the first to draw, just to redeem themselves after the disappointment against leader Salles, two weeks earlier. To start, they scored three tries. Nothing seemed to suggest an awakening of the USM players. However, resilient and determined, they did not leave the situation unchanged. Taking advantage of a double inferiority following yellow cards to two Breton pillars (Foigne and Achard), they resurfaced. First with the scorer Bares, who started with a 2/2 at the foot (19-6, 29th). Then with a quick try scored by Brocas on the right wing following Farmer’s full-axis work. Bares’ 3/3 made the scoreboard much more lenient at the break (19-13).
Peyri keeps hope alive
From rotations to exploitation of opposing weaknesses, Rennes did not give up. Marmande defended his line well, always cleanly and with precise tackles. But the Bretons had the objective of the offensive bonus, quickly achieved with the tries of Vérité and Soto (33-13, 66th). Apart from Peyri’s powerful try (33-20, 69th), the Binious hardly feared a return from Marmande.
