Rennes: 140M € to transform waste into heating – Rennes

€ 140 million is the amount of the contract concluded between Veolia and Rennes Métropole for the ten-year operation of the Villejean incinerator. A agreement which also provides for the construction of a waste transfer center. Built in 1968, the Villejean Energy Recovery Unit (UVE) will undergo major modernization work from April 2022. The key: a capacity increased to 144,000 tonnes of waste per year.

A project which, during the public inquiry, enabled the inhabitants of the district to express their concerns about the risks of increased air pollution. Even if, on this point, Véolia like the community did everything to reassure them. While emphasizing the advantages of seeing such a production capacity expanded. “The new installation will increase electricity production from UVE by 120% and heat by 40%”, insists Veolia. The future incinerator will in fact provide heating to 35,000 homes via the district heating network, compared to 20,000 currently.

At the same time, the global company will build a new site in Bourgbarré. Temporarily dedicated to the transfer of waste from April 2022 to July 2023. It will eventually be converted into a plaster waste recovery unit. After three years of research with the civil engineering and mechanical engineering laboratory of the University of Rennes 1, this facility with a capacity of 15,000 tonnes per year will be operated by Envie, a social and solidarity economy company.
