The free subscription is one of the new anti-crisis measures to deal with inflation. In this sense, it will discount all the passes for various Cercanías, rodalíes and Media Distancia trips operated by Renfe. It will be free from September 1 and will run until December 31.
The objective of the Government is, as it announced last June, to promote the use of collective public transport in daily forced mobility as “a safer, more reliable, comfortable, economical and sustainable means of transport than the private car”.
Registration on the Renfe website
From the Last August 8, users can register on the Renfe and Renfe Cercanías website and applications to prepare the necessary procedures with a view to the acquisition of season tickets from this Wednesday. Users who normally use Renfe tools will already have this step done, since it involves recording the data.
Deposit for payment
Renfe will demand a deposit of 10 euros to acquire the bonds that will allow free travel on Cercanías trains between September 1 and December 31, which will be returned if the user makes a minimum number of trips.
To proceed with the return of the deposit, it will be made in the same means of payment used by the user. Thus, if the subscription was paid by card, it will be returned to it and if it was made in cash, the refund must be requested at a ticket office. In order to get the money back, a minimum of 16 trips will have had to be made during the stipulated period.
These free subscriptions will be valid in a single Cercanías nucleus and will allow travel throughout the network of this nucleus. They can be purchased on the Renfe website and application and at the stations.
How to request the free subscription?
The period for requesting the free transport pass begins on August 24. A measure that will benefit more than 300,000 people who have already registered on the Renfe website.
The subscription will be purchased for each Cercanías nucleus and will be valid for unlimited trips between any origin and destination. All clients will be able to obtain this credit at the ticket offices, self-service machines and through the Renfe Cercanías appexcept in Asturias and Santander, where they can only purchase it physically.
The app will generate a QR code that will be downloaded to the mobile and that can be used to directly cross the turnstiles in the Cercanías nuclei of Madrid, Málaga, Murcia/Alicante, Valencia and Zaragoza.

It will also generate a seven-digit code with which the subscription can be obtained on physical support or loaded onto the one already available to the customer at the ticket offices or self-service machines in the centers of Cádiz, San Sebastián, Bilbao, Seville and Barcelona. In any case, in the stations of these nuclei Renfe will have support personnel in case you need help to process the process.
