Very soon, on July 28, in Lielvārde park you will be able to watch and listen to the renewed production of the legendary rock opera “Lāčplēsis” by Zigmars Liepins and Māras Zālītes. Marking the 35th anniversary of this work and the 135th anniversary of Andrej Pumpura’s epic “Lāčplēsis”, the rock opera will be performed for the first time in Andrej Pumpura’s hometown of Lielvārde.
In the impressive scenography of the rock opera stage, the underwater world will be depicted using 11 LED screens, on which video artist Artis Dzērve will bring to life specially created paintings by painter Kristine Kutepova.
Metal artist Normunds Bērziņš makes the central structure of the stage light and flowing, symbolizing the course of the Daugava stream – as a bridge connecting the past with the present.
“The production is like a fruit that slowly ripens. It is a process in which the participants, all creators, technical solutions, also external influences meet, and there is a clear path ahead, which we walk together with a great team, where everyone has something to say,” says director Rēzija Kalniņa. “A director takes the world apart in order to create it again, and that’s what we do. Modernly relevant, seeing, feeling and also with awareness on all levels. The bear predator in our production is like a nugget, which is not yet a diamond, it is a diamond. And then life polishes that diamond until it becomes a brilliant. Both Kangar and Bearcat are in the same position as children, and the question is at which point who remains in the dunghill, wrapped in a beautiful candy wrapper, and who still breaks free, even if he has to peel himself off like an onion. If we see something more behind each known image, then we feel that this world and land – Latvia, carries us further as heroes, giving us the opportunity to become such.”
In the new production of the rock opera, the role of Lāčpleš has been entrusted to singer Atis Zviedri, Laimdota will be played by vocalist Beāte Zvidre, Marts Kristians Kalniņš will play Kangar, and according to the director Rēzija Kalniņa, it is the mutual relations of this trio that will be at the center of the new rock opera performance.
