Renewed Commitment to Santander Film Festival: Minister of Public Works Affirms Government Support

Santander – 06.09.2023

The Minister of Public Works, Territorial Planning and the Environment, Roberto Media, has renewed the commitment of the Government of Cantabria to the Santander Film Festival that was presented today at the Botín Center and will be held between the 14th and 21st of September at various locations in the city, including the Centro Botín, the CASYC and the Mario Camus Film Library.

Media, who was accompanied in the presentation by the General Director of Culture, Juan Antonio González Fuentes, has announced that it will continue to support the Faro Verde Award during the next editions, which this year will be awarded to TVE for its career in defense of the environment through La 2. This award recognizes an organization or a filmmaker and the counselor has referred to the television programs “El hombre y la Tierra”, “Aquí, la Tierra” or “El escarabajo verde” that have done so much for dissemination and promotion of environmental protection.

The counselor recalled that this year his ministry will also sponsor the third edition of environmental short films, “a space to introduce new creators from the audiovisual sector, both from Cantabria and from the rest of the country, and which serves above all to promote our natural spaces and our rural environment as great cinematographic settings”, has pointed out Media.

For his part, the Director of Culture, Juan Antonio González Fuentes, stressed that our Cantabrian and Santander society have a film-loving character and it is an enormous fortune to have this festival and directors such as Mario Camus, Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón or Paulino Viota. He also highlighted the role played by the Film Library in promoting this love of cinema, which has contributed to the importance of cinephilia in Santander and Cantabria.

The festival will have the screening of 43 films, of which 7 will compete in the ‘Operas Primas’ section. These feature films are “Friends Until Death”, directed by Javier Veiga; “Un sol radiant”, directed by Mònica Cambra and Ariadna Fortuny; “My last sentence”, directed by Juan Mata; “Crossroads,” directed by Dan Barreri; “Martínez”, directed by Lorena Padilla; “The useless servant”, directed by Fernando Lacolla and “The voice of the sun” (closing film), directed by Carol Polakoff.

The festival will reward the actors Carmen Machi and Karra Elejalde with a Lighthouse of Honor each, in recognition of their outstanding film career. The awards ceremony will take place at the Centro Botín, on September 21, during the closing of the edition of this contest. At the closing ceremony, the film starring both of them, “La voz del sol”, directed by Carol Polakoff, will be released.

Machi and Elejalde coincided as a film couple in one of the great successes of Spanish cinema, “Ocho apellidos vascos”, and they will receive this well-deserved recognition granted by the FCS, after more than thirty years dedicated to acting.

Both Carmen Machi and Karra Elejalde will have a program dedicated to them at the Santander Film Festival, within the Tributes section. In the section dedicated to the actress, “The Volunteer and Little Pig” will be screened. In the case of Elejalde, you can see: “Also the rain”, “While the war lasts” and “Airbag”, directed by Juanma Bajo, whose 26th anniversary is celebrated this year and part of its filming took place in Santander .

The festival will also pay tribute to actress Maribel Verdú with the ‘El faro dos orillas’ Award for her renowned career, which has led her to work with well-known Spanish directors and prominent Latin American filmmakers throughout her long career. ‘El faro dos orillas’ is an award given in each edition to a professional in the film industry who builds bridges between Spain and America, through his work. In the case of Verdú, who began his career when he was only 13 years old, his filmography supports this requirement, with titles as outstanding as “Y tu mamá también”, by Alfonso Cuarón, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, by Guillermo del Toro or “Raymond and Ray”, by Rodrigo Garcia.

Another tribute will be dedicated to the filmmaker Carlos Saura with a special film, documentary and literature program, since the presentation of the book on his memoirs will also be included. All this, in different official settings of the contest that will take place on Saturday, September 16.

The Santander Film Festival, organized by the Botín Center and Morena Films, has the collaboration of the Government of Cantabria and the Santander City Council. Focused mainly on cinema, it also accommodates other arts in this seventh edition of the festival.
