Marjayoun, South Lebanon/Jerusalem, October 17, 2023 (Xinhua) This morning (Tuesday), the exchange of bombing was renewed on both sides of the border between Lebanon and Israel, which announced the “thwart” of an infiltration of militants from Lebanon, killing four of them.
Lebanese military sources told Xinhua News Agency that a clash took place at dawn today between an armed cell, whose identity has not yet been determined, and an Israeli force when the first attempted to infiltrate the Israeli side.
The sources added that “the armed cell attempted to infiltrate through the barbed wire border fence from Lebanon to Israel and was discovered by the Israeli army, which targeted it with tank shells and machine gun rounds,” without specifying the fate of the cell.
According to the sources, several rocket shells were fired today from the Lebanese side towards several targets inside the Metula settlement adjacent to the Lebanese border, and columns of smoke were seen emanating from inside it.
Several artillery shells were also fired towards the outskirts of the settlement.
The sources continued, “Israeli artillery subsequently fired more than 50 shells towards several Lebanese areas, and the bombing focused on Hamams Hill and the outskirts of the towns of Kafr Kila, Al-Adisa, Dermimas, Al-Azziyah, and Sahl Al-Khiyam, and no casualties have yet been reported.”
During the dawn hours, the Israeli army fired more than 150 shells towards Lebanese areas in the western and eastern sectors, and 100 phosphorus shells targeted the town of Al-Dahira, west of southern Lebanon, wounding three citizens and damaging about 50 homes, according to the sources.
The sources stated that “the shells also struck the outskirts of the towns of Al-Adissa, Houla, Mays Al-Jabal, Blida and Rmeish in the eastern sector of southern Lebanon, causing fires to break out in forested areas and damaging some homes.”
On the other hand, the Israeli army said in a statement today that its forces thwarted an infiltration attempt by a cell of “terrorists” that was monitored approaching the security fence on the Lebanese border and planting an explosive device, and 4 of its members were eliminated.
On the other hand, Hezbollah targeted Israeli targets in the town of Metula adjacent to the border with an anti-tank missile, according to Israeli media.
Israeli medical sources reported that there were injuries as a result of the missile launch.
The Ziv Medical Center in the city of Safed, northern Israel, said in a statement that the emergency room “is preparing for the arrival of 3 casualties as a result of an anti-tank missile attack.”
The level of tension on the border between Lebanon and Israel rose after the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) launched Operation “Al-Aqsa Flood” on October 7, with the border intermittently witnessing exchanges of bombing and shooting between Hezbollah, Palestinian movements, and the Israeli army, resulting in deaths and injuries on both sides.
