Renewable Energy Generation in August: Decreased Sunlight Impacts Output

August was a mediocre month for generating renewable energy. The sun shone much less than last year and as a result considerably less renewable energy was generated than in previous months.

There was still a “modest” growth of 9 percent compared to a year ago. According to Energieopwek.nl this increase is due to the fact that many solar panels have been added in a year’s time.

Last month, 52 percent of all electricity was renewable, compared to 45 percent a year earlier. This means that the majority of electricity has come from renewable sources for five months in a row. Sun is the most important renewable energy source, for biomass and wind energy.

Energieopwek.nl also points to figures from the KNMI as an explanation for the lesser month. The sun shone in August last year with 282 hours much more than average. This year it returned around average at 190 hours. “There wasn’t much extra wind either, so that source compensated to a limited extent,” says the website, which is part of the National Climate Platform.
