Renée’s bridge: Jan Eliasson got a goat and insulted Saddam Hussein

Diplomatic life led to both pleasant and unpleasant memories

Three new guests meet Renée Nyberg on her dock. They talk about their careers and give life anecdotes. Above all, former diplomat Jan Eliasson has some interesting stories to share. Anja Pärsson gets some of her skills in carpentry when she builds a doghouse and Linnea Henriksson talks about her Idol days and her career as an artist.

In the beautiful environment of Stockholm’s archipelago continues the presenter Renée Nyberg to have deep conversations with various guests. This time guests before this Idol– the participant Linnea Henriksson, who after his time in the television box has flourished with his music career. Ski star Anja Pärson is also in and she talks about her relationship with her wife, among other things Filippa Rådin and his bonus family. She also builds a dog house for the bridge’s own dog, Charlie.

Last but not least, guests too Jan Eliasson, a retired diplomat who has worked as both foreign minister and president of the UN. He shares the fears and how he dealt with them in his active years as a diplomat abroad.

Never turn down a gift – get the goat on the helicopter

During the first meal of the daythe breakfast sandwiches which Anja generously brought, remember Jan an event that showed the culture clashes that can occur when negotiating as a diplomat.

During a ceasefire negotiation that ended positively, one tribe wanted to give Jan a slightly different parting gift. When he was about to board a helicopter back, they brought a lifetime of live goats to give him.

The helicopter pilot did not want it on board, but Jan knew the meaning of refusing such a gift and finally managed to persuade the pilot. He then gave the goat, which survived the surely dizzying flight, to a refugee camp where it was loved by the children and named Jan.

Left a farewell letter to his wife after insulting Saddam Hussein

But everyone Jans stories are not as funny as a goat on a helicopter. He remembers back to when he accidentally insulted Iraq’s dictator Saddam Hussein at one point. He would then travel by helicopter, which for the dictator was a classic way to get rid of enemies. Jan became so worried that he handed over a farewell letter to his wife via the Swedish embassy.

He laughs at the anecdote on the bridge, but describes it as a really unpleasant incident.

So, not to offend a dictator and to always persuade a pilot to bring a goat was some advice Jan Eliasson gave us in today’s episode. Linnea and Anja also provide good insights into life, including how couples therapy can be a great help in relationships, so this episode should not be missed.
