Renée Soutendijk has won the Golden Calf for best leading role in a feature film for her role in Sweet Dreams. The film also won the most important prize: the Golden Calf for best film. The film, which opened this year’s Dutch Film Festival, became the big winner of this year’s Golden Calves Gala with six prizes.
The satirical film Sweet Dreams tells the story of the family of a Dutch sugar manufacturer on a remote Indonesian island in the waning days of the colonial era.
It is the second time that the 66-year-old Soutendijk has taken home the prestigious film prize. In 1985 she won the Golden Calf as an oeuvre prize.
Florian Myjer also won a Golden Calf for his role in Sweet Dreams (Best Supporting Actor). Ena Sendijarević won the award for best director and the film also won prizes in the categories Best Camera (Emo Weemhoff) and Best Costume Design (Bernadette Corstens).
Most important film award
The Golden Calves are the most important film prizes in the Netherlands. They have been awarded annually since 1981 at the end of the Dutch Film Festival.
Earlier in the day it was announced that the Golden Calf for best leading role in a drama series had been won by Eva Crutzen. Comedian Crutzen plays the leading role in the series Soil and also wrote the script for the six-part comedy drama series. It will appear on TV next year.
The audience award went to De Tatta’s, a film about a family that is forced to exchange its enormous house for a flat. The film was a great success in Dutch cinemas: more than 400,000 people saw the film.
