That of “such a stick, such a splinter” fits like a glove when referring to life Renée Reed, our good protagonist of the day. The concept of “heritage” has always been present in the personal trajectory of the Louisiana woman: from a very young age, Renée enjoyed the “jams” of her grandfather Harry Trahan, a proven accordionist, in a family store. Also direct from her uncle Revon Reed, one of the most legendary musicians in a culture, the Cajun, to which the twenty-year-old singer-songwriter has always belonged. As if feeling an intergenerational testimony, Reed took those indigenous records, and that strong color palette, to form a local band (Shrugs) with some high school friends. After touring gambling dens in Lafayette, New Orleans and Austin, and enriching herself by attending musical masterclasses such as the folk one taught by Richard Thompson in the outskirts of Woodstock, this petite artist set out to explore her possibilities in a solo format. There the fire arose and also the magic of an intrinsic, own and 100% formed tone that, looking at France from the corner of the eye, radiates heat from swampy areas of New Orleans.
Early singles like ‘Out Loud’ or ‘Until Tomorrow’ perfectly exemplify a dreamy sound that oozes lo-fi, drinks equal parts of François Hardy and Adrianne Lenker (Big Thief) and stands as (necessary) predecessor of what was specified by Scott Matthews in the past decade. Or, failing that, by a Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star) away from “Shoegazian” lands. The v.2.0, however, has arrived with the recent ‘Fast One’, and some «dream-fi folk» textures that make us believe in the «chance» that Serge Gainsbourg would at some point step on the Cathedral of St. Louis.
These three tracks, without exceptions, will serve as the skeleton of “Renée Reed”, debut album that our “promises” of the day will release on March 26, under Keeled Scales, record company of Katy Kirby and… Buck Meek. Yes, Adrianne Lenker’s fatigue partner in Big Thief. It was clear that the concept “chance” does not appear in the equation: in the millimeter case “Renée Reed” everything exudes a familiar scent, everything ends up staying at home. This will end as Kevin Bacon’s six degrees of separation, You’ll see.
