René Gómez, National Coordinator of the Ecuadorian Confederation of Heavy Transport (CONFETRAPE and UTRAPE) spoke about the lack of security of heavy transport on the roads of Ecuador, indicating that the kidnapping of drivers by criminal gangs that are considered terrorists has increased. by President Daniel Noboa.
In an interview with the Diálogo program on Radio i99, he reported that the extortionists kidnapped 8 to 10 heavy vehicles per day. “The modus operandi of the gangs was no longer to steal the cargo but to kidnap the drivers,” he said.
When asked if they agree to pay 15% VAT (3 more points), Gómez was emphatic in stating: “Yes, we prefer to pay 15% VAT, rather than paying for the vaccine.”
He stated that it is necessary for the Government to obtain the resources to provide armored vehicles to the Police and weapons to the Armed Forces. Given this, he regretted that the Organic Law project to confront the internal armed conflict, the social and economic crisis, is becoming political due to the factions that oppose it.
“Good for the assembly members who live inside a bubble and who have never been extorted like the common citizen or like the transporters who go out to work and who do not return home and in the worst case are murdered. “We do agree with the increase in VAT proposed by President Noboa to allow the vaccine to be paid for,” said Gómez.
Commerce in Ecuador has been seriously affected by extortionists who in exchange for “protection” ask for the famous “vaccine”, which means paying high amounts of money monthly, weekly and daily. This has forced many to close their businesses due to the lack of security and especially due to the attacks they have suffered when they refuse to pay the value.
