Renault is ramping up the pre-launch marketing campaign for the electric Renault 5, which is due to debut in dealerships next year but could make its world premiere at the Munich Motor Show. A series of photos of the camouflaged car have been published, including those in which Luca de Meo, the head of Renault, is testing the new model.
Renault has already produced several dozen Renault 5 cars, prototypes intended for tests, in the micro-factory in Paris, located in the Technocentre, the famous R&D center of the French group. A series of images released by the company during the production process carefully reveal some details of the future all-electric car, one that will take at least 80% of the concept presented two years ago. Limited series production in the Technocentre is intended exclusively for testing and checking the entire assembly process, so that by the time the car goes into series production at the Douai plant, all possible errors have been eliminated.
The prototype development procedure started with the so-called “donkeys”, the first prototypes that had Clio car bodywork, but which were, in reality, the complete powertrain platforms of the Renault 5. The platform is the new CMF-BEV, a derivative from the current CMF-B, which is also used, in low specification, on the Sandero/Jogger. After the “donkeys”, the first camouflaged prototypes follow, which are tested on the roads of Europe, both in the cold north and in the hot south.
After this moment, the development of the facilities that will produce the components of the new model begins, and the first pre-series cars are produced in the Technocentre. On this occasion, all the electronic components, software and connectors that will be found on the series cars are also tested.
In total, Renault says 60 of the Renault 5 prototypes are to be produced before the car moves to the Douai plant.
Meanwhile, Renault Group boss Luca de Meo was photographed testing the new model. “Hidden by the forests of Normandy, I had the chance to get behind the wheel of the new Renault 5 on the track of the Aubevoy Technical Center, our most secret facility,” says Meo, smiling from behind the wheel of a camouflaged Renault 5. He describes the car in a short sentence: “Great handling, strong torque typical of electric cars and the interior of a true «voiture a vivre», conformable and highly technological. This is what we are preparing for you, along with a few other surprises”. A second image shows the car seen from behind, obviously still camouflaged.

The Renault 5 is Luca de Meo’s team’s vision for the electric B-segment, where the current ZOE should have had a new generation, but which has been replaced by the new model that brings back both the name of the old R5 and the proportions and style of the famous super -mini. It embodies what Renault calls the “Nouvelle Vague”, a current that uses the nostalgia of the 50s in current French culture. The aggressive marketing that Renault started for this model recalls the launch and success of the new Fiat 500, which the Italian brand brought to the market with the same Luca de Meo at the helm.
The new Renault 5 is scheduled to be launched in 2024 in European markets, but Renault has confirmed its presence at the IAA Munich Motor Show, where it will probably not miss the moment to unveil its new electric model for the first time.
