Renault is in talks to reduce its stake in Nissan

Renault and Nissan plan to restructure their alliance so that their mutual shares equal 15 percent. Nissan, which has a 15 percent non-voting stake in the French partner, has been seeking a more balanced capital relationship for several years.

Last year, Renault sold 1,466,729 cars of the same brand, which represents a decrease of 9.4 percent compared to the previous year. The Renault brand accounts for two thirds of the group’s sales. The figures do not include Russia – even with them, sales fell by 15 percent.

The French automaker has been hit harder than most of its competitors by the crisis linked to the covid-19 pandemic and supply chain problems due to chip shortages. They are now trying to boost profitability, betting mainly on higher-margin cars and electric cars.

In the sale of electric cars in Europe, the Renault brand finished in third place, behind Toyota and Tesla. In total, Renault sold 228,000 electric cars, 12 percent more than the year before.

Globally, Renault’s share of the car market was four percent last year, a decrease of 0.5 percentage points. Of the ten largest markets, Renault saw sales increase in only two, Turkey and Colombia. On the domestic, French market, sales fell by 15 percent.
