Austral is Renault’s third model to focus directly on the lower-middle-class crossover segment. After the electric Megane E-Tech and the coupe-SUV Arkana.

Unlike the arcana, however, it builds on the third generation of larger CMF-CD platforms, similar to the new Nissan Qashqai. The exterior design continues in the established brand language with the C-shaped headlights and rear lights almost connected into one horizontal unit. The car can have up to 20-inch wheel discs.

Austral has a new logo and is the first model to be available in the Esprit Alpine sports design package, which refers to the Alpine sports brand.

The futuristically shaped interior with a horizontal exhalation bar at the passenger wants to impress mainly with the large screens of the new infotainment. The digital instrument panel is 12.3 inches, the middle one offers 12 inches and there is also a transparent head-up display projecting information on an area of 9.3 inches.

Thanks to the sliding rear seats, the luggage compartment has up to 575 liters in the basic configuration, and 1525 liters when the seats are folded down.

While the current megane is only electric, Australian internal combustion engines count. They will always be petrol, diesel is not considered. There will not be a three-cylinder available in the Czech Republic.

First, the Australian will be introduced with a four-cylinder 1.3 TCe with outputs of 103 kilowatts, 140 hp and 118 kW, 160 hp, with a 12V mildhybrid system. The weaker version gives you a choice between a manual and an automatic, the more powerful only the automatic, on request with all-wheel drive.

The full hybrid capable of short-term electric driving offers with the same engine outputs of 118 kW, 160 hp or up to 132 kW, 200 hp. The automatic transmission is no longer a dual-clutch transmission, but a CVT variator.

Austral will also offer turning of the rear wheels, up to five degrees, so the turning radius is a great 10.1 meters.

Orders for the new Renault Austral will start in the second half of this year and the sale of the car at the turn of 2022/2023.
