The French car manufacturer Renault has confirmed that there are indeed discussions with the German car concern Volkswagen about the fact that the two manufacturers could jointly develop a small budget class electric car. It was previously rumoured, but now the information has been confirmed by Renault boss Luca de Meo, who told him that there had been good talks between the two sides.
He hinted that there are several other possible cooperation partners with whom they could try to realize this project, but de Meo refused to specify them. However, he points out that Renault is open to any offer.
Previously it was said that Renault, VW and also Stellantis could join forces to produce cheaper electric cars and try to reduce various costs related to technical development. In our part of the world, car manufacturers are very concerned about the Chinese efforts to expand and take over market share in Europe, and the Chinese are actually doing it quite successfully. Car manufacturers are currently desperately trying to find solutions to reduce prices in order to offer customers more affordable electric cars. It is no secret that the market has not grown as fast as it would like, so, for example, Mercedes has backed away from its ambitions to offer only electric cars in 2030 – Mercedes will use internal combustion engines for quite some time.
As for Renault itself, they are quite successful in developing the budget class offer – the new, reborn and electric Renault 5 has just been presented. It is known that a smaller and cheaper Renault 4 is expected, but in about two years an electric Renault Twingo is also planned, the starting price of which planned under 20 thousand euros.
